Abstract
Germ cells are endowed with unique properties like
the ability to undergo meiosis and differentiate
into gametes in order to perpetuate the genetic
material. Spermatogonial stem cells (SSC) are
considered as the best suited undifferentiated
germ cells and are being consistently studied to
reveal the basic physiology, genomics and
transcriptomics of those cells. SSC provide an
excellent model system to understand the
differentiation, development and functioning of
gonads and further use of these cells in
transplantation-cell based therapies. In the
present article, basic aspects of spermatogonial
multiplication, regulation of stem cell renewal
and differentiation would be discussed.
Keywords: Spermatogonial stem cells,
spermatogenesis, testis, self-renewal.
